ChatGPT Plus and other paid ChatGPT plans are billed by card. If you prefer not to use your main bank card for subscriptions — or you simply want a separate card that only holds the money you put on it — a virtual prepaid card is a practical option. This guide walks through the whole process, from choosing a card to handling renewals, and explains the limits you should know about before you start.
Before you start: ChatGPT is only available in the countries and territories that OpenAI supports, and you must follow OpenAI’s terms of use. A virtual card is a payment method; it does not change where a service is available or who may use it.
Why use a virtual card for an AI subscription?
A virtual card is a card number, expiry date and security code that exists only online. There is no plastic card to carry. For subscriptions, that has a few concrete advantages:
- Spending control. A prepaid card can only spend the balance you load onto it. A subscription can never charge more than what’s on the card.
- Separation. Keeping subscriptions on their own card makes them easy to track and keeps your main bank card details off another merchant’s records.
- Quick setup. A VEXORA card is usually ready within minutes after your payment is confirmed, so you don’t wait for a card to arrive by post.
There are trade-offs too. Some merchants decline certain prepaid cards, and you need to remember to top up before renewals. We cover both below.
Step 1: Pick a suitable card
For AI subscriptions, VEXORA offers the AI & Ads Card, a virtual Visa designed for AI subscriptions (such as ChatGPT, Claude or Midjourney), online advertising and US online payments. Its top-ups are credited instantly, which helps when a renewal is due soon. The Online Card, a virtual Mastercard for online payments, is an alternative for general online spending.
Each card has a one-time price — $12 for the AI & Ads Card and $10 for the Online Card at the time of writing — and every top-up has a fee of 3% + $2. Your exact price, and the amount expected on the card after a top-up, is shown before you confirm. Prices can change, so treat the pricing page on vexoracard.com as the reference.
Step 2: Work out how much to load
Look at the price of the ChatGPT plan you want on OpenAI’s own pricing or checkout page. The price you are charged can depend on your country, and tax may be added at checkout.
A simple rule of thumb:
- Take the plan price shown at checkout, including tax.
- Add a small buffer for rounding or small price changes.
- Check the amount expected on the card in your top-up review — that is what you can actually spend, after fees and any card issuer charges.
If you plan to keep the subscription for several months, you can load more than one month at a time. Just remember that the balance sits on the card until you spend it or return it to your VEXORA balance.
Step 3: Order and top up your card
- Create a free account on vexoracard.com.
- Choose the card and review the price.
- Pay. Amounts are in US dollars and you pay with crypto, for example the USDT stablecoin. Always check the exact amount and network shown on the payment page — crypto payments are irreversible.
- Wait for the payment to be confirmed. Your order page updates by itself, and the card is usually ready within minutes.
- Top up the card with the amount you worked out in step 2.
Step 4: Subscribe in ChatGPT
- Sign in to ChatGPT and open the upgrade or plan options.
- Choose the plan and continue to checkout.
- Enter the card number, expiry date and security code from your VEXORA dashboard.
- Enter the cardholder name and billing details that belong to your card. If you’re unsure what to enter, check the card details in your dashboard or ask VEXORA support.
- Confirm the payment.
Some payments ask for an extra verification step, often called 3-D Secure. When the issuer sends a one-time verification code for a VEXORA card, it is shown to you in your dashboard. Never share that code with anyone — VEXORA staff will never ask for it.
Step 5: Keep renewals working
Subscriptions renew automatically on the same date each month (or year). With a prepaid card, the renewal only goes through if there’s enough balance at that moment.
- Set a reminder a few days before the renewal date to check the card balance.
- Top up early rather than on the day of renewal, so a delayed payment confirmation doesn’t cause a failed charge.
- Watch for price changes. If the plan price or tax changes, your usual top-up may not be enough.
If a renewal fails, OpenAI usually lets you update or retry the payment from the billing settings. If you no longer want the plan, cancel it in ChatGPT’s settings before the renewal date — cancelling at the merchant is the reliable way to stop future charges.
Why might a payment be declined?
Card payments can be declined for several reasons, and many of them have nothing to do with the card itself:
- Insufficient balance, often because tax or a price change pushed the total above what’s on the card.
- Incorrect details, such as a mistyped number, expiry date or security code.
- Merchant rules. Merchants and their payment processors run their own risk checks and may decline some prepaid cards.
- Verification not completed, for example if a 3-D Secure step timed out.
- Availability. If the service isn’t offered in your country, checkout will not work, and you should not try to get around that.
Check the transaction list on your card first: it shows whether the payment reached the card and why it may have failed. If you can’t work it out, contact VEXORA support with the time and amount of the attempt.
Honest limitations
- Acceptance isn’t guaranteed. Whether a specific card is accepted is decided by the merchant and the issuer.
- No overdraft. A prepaid card can’t go below zero, so renewals fail if you forget to top up.
- Fees. Card prices and top-up fees add to the cost of the subscription. Compare the total with other payment methods available to you.
- Card controls. The card provider doesn’t offer freezing or closing cards. To stop a subscription, cancel it with the merchant; you can return any unspent balance to your VEXORA balance at any time.
Summary
Paying for ChatGPT with a virtual card takes a few minutes: pick a card designed for online and AI payments, load the plan price plus tax and a small buffer, subscribe with the card details from your dashboard, and top up before each renewal. Keep your verification codes private, cancel at the merchant when you no longer need the plan, and check the current prices on vexoracard.com before you order.
Frequently asked questions
Can I pay for ChatGPT Plus with a prepaid virtual card?
In many cases, yes. OpenAI's checkout accepts major card networks, and a virtual prepaid card with enough balance works like any other card. Acceptance is decided by the merchant and the issuer, so it is not guaranteed for every card or country.
How much should I load onto the card?
Load at least the subscription price shown at checkout plus any tax, and keep a small buffer. If you want the subscription to renew automatically, top up again before each renewal date.
What happens if the renewal payment fails?
The renewal is declined and OpenAI typically retries for a short period. If payment keeps failing, the subscription can lapse to the free plan. Top up the card and update or retry the payment in your ChatGPT billing settings.
Which VEXORA card is best for ChatGPT?
The AI & Ads Card is designed for AI subscriptions and US online payments, and its top-ups are credited instantly. The Online Card also works for many online payments.
